Sortes Astrampsychi
Sortes Astrampsychi is the Latin title of a 3rd century AD
Greek-language Roman oracle book attributed to Astrampsychus the Egyptian. These
Oracles of Astrampsychus allow one to ask the gods of the Roman world personal
questions about the future. The oracle book was very popular in the late Roman
Empire, but together with paganism vanished in the early Middle Ages. Only a few
papyrus fragments have been preserved in the Egyptian desert. The oracle book
survived the Middle Ages though... thanks to Christian monks. With just a few
minor alterations they turned the pagan document into a Christian oracle book
suitable for the Byzantine monastery libraries. At the beginning of the 21st
century the original text was reconstructed on the basis of several 3rd to 6th
century AD ancient papyrus fragments and 13th to 16th century Byzantine
manuscripts.
The Sortes Astrampsychi (The Lots of Astrampsychus), was a
popular
Greco-Roman
fortune-telling guide written under the
pseudonym
Astrampsychus. The book contained instructions for throwing lots, or
sortes, the result of which would be used to look up prewritten simple
sentences by means of a numerical index. In essence, the procedure was similar
to the I Ching.
The text is known from a dozen of papyrus fragments, and from a
Byzantine codex of the 9th or 10th century. The latter is heavily modified,
with Christian religious elements substituted for pagan ones.
