Ladder to the Moon

The child went to the wilderness with her most loved Grandfather. He said that he wanted to show her something that was not TV, or Video Games, or Fashion. He said he wanted to show her the simplicity of nature. So she went with him to "the Secret Place" that was no secret at all to the family. It was a small acreage on a lake.

To find it, you had to go down some winding roads, and past some run down villages until you came to a place high up in the hills, away from the city.

When you arrive, you saw the log house, the cabin by a lake that Grandfather had owned forever, as had his father, and his father before him.

Driving up the little girl recalled the story Grandfather had often told her. Near to his passing her Great-Grandfather had called in his son (her Grand-father) to hand over over the Title Deeds. She remembers the words he said, "Son, this place is a jewel. A Jewel is something someone values, and because I love it, it is priceless to me. Keep it in your heart, and keep it in the family, and it will always help you and those you love remember what is important in life."

So they came to the old family cabin, and together they spent the day brushing out the usual dust and cobwebs, and bringing in the wood for the fire. The girl remembered how a few years ago at this very spot her father had argued with her mum, and stormed out.

She remembered her mother's tears, and the sadness, and the drinking. Since that time, she had been with Gramps. And he always loved to bring her up to the old log house. She never really knew why, but here, at this place, she always felt secure

Night came, and the Full Moon rose over the East to shine full down across the lake to the cottage. The girl saw it's light shining on the lake, and gasped at the beauty. "It is like a Ladder on the lake, Grandpa, a Ladder to the Moon!"

The Grandfather smiled, and laughed softly. The old face, washed with wrinkles, became young again as he said: "That Ladder you see, what happens when you touch it?"

"It is just the reflection on the water, you know that Gramps" she answers, smiling.

"But the Moon ... No matter what happens to the reflection the Moon is still there, isn't it?" He asked.

"Of course it is... The Moon is there forever!" She replied, laughing

The old man smiled. "That's right little one. The Moon IS there forever, but the Ladder to the Moon, it's just a reflection on a lake. You can't climb it, you cannot touch it, but yet there it ALSO is there.

"This Ladder to the Moon that you see ... It is like our dreams, our hopes and our wishes. These are fragile things, and they will break if you touch them with doubt or suspicion. But yet, like the moon, it is always there and returns when the moon is full.

"Our dreams are defenseless against the things that would disturb them, the negatives of the world, but even though they are scattered always remember that they point to something that is Eternal. Always remember that in time they reform, and point the way once more."

The young girl seemed a little puzzled, so the old man explained further.

"Our dreams are not forever. Today you may wish for an ice cream, but tomorrow it will be a new doll. The dream changes like the reflection on the water, here today, gone tomorrow, back again the day after. Yet there is a type of dream, a dream of higher things, that will lead us to things that DO last. These are dreams that reflect the highest aspect of yourself, like the moon on the water.

"The Moon is telling us to hold fast to the highest of our dreams, and to remember that in the dark of night, just wait, and the Full Moon shall return. This patience with all your hopes and wishes will serve to lead you to becoming a better person, then "you" have become something that will last the test of time. YOU have become one with the Moon.

"Most importantly of all ... If your dreams and wishes lead you to appreciate the dreams and wishes of another, then you have found something truly permanent. If you can become someone who considers that another's dreams and goals are ALSO precious things, not to be touched, then you will have discovered the greatest secret of all... That the Moon is inside your heart.

"There are Three Moons in Man's heart. The First is the Dark Moon, the unconscious blind self. The Second is the Growing Moon, the one that seeks to understand the darkness. The Third is the Full Moon, the place inside when we shine. And believe me, what we ALL want is that piece inside us to shine."

The Grandfather was miles away. He was in the war, he was with his beloved wife, he was with the family dog and the good and hard times of his past, he was with his sad and lost daughter. All were passing, all were lost to life while he alone remained.

"So little one... Tell me.. What is your dream for tonight?"

"Just to stay here a little longer." the little girl answers, not really understanding the words Grandpa spoke, but feeling the love.

The Grandfather looked into her eyes, and saw the reflection of the moon on a small tear that welled on the rim. He said nothing as it grew, and fell. He listened as the little one sobbed and ran into his arms. He felt her heart feel the moment, and he said nothing, but his thoughts ran down an entire lifetime

Right here was his safe place. This is where he came throughout his life when times were hard. When he was in  Europe fighting a war, he came here in his thoughts. Places like this, he thought to himself, are important for the Soul. Places like this are where Soul can emerge and shine freely like the Full Moon in the sky.

Here you can come and watch the reflection of your thoughts and your feelings play out on the backdrop of nature. Here you can pause, and cut from the ways of the world, and just be yourself. He thought long and deep, and as he sat looking out to the worlds beyond, she fell asleep in his arms

"If we have to fight for something in life, little one, it should be for places like this, and times like these. People killing each other with wars and words... It is so pointless, and so expensive." He murmured as he scooped her up and put the little girl to bed.

"Thank you for showing me the Moon, and her ladder Grandpa..." she whispered as he drew the covers over her. The old man smiled, and thought about the world and all the changes he had seen. He thought back to his own father, and his grandfather who had bought this place so long ago.

Tomorrow, tomorrow. What will be tomorrow? Perhaps here was the one who would be able to cherish the gift he was given by his father, and by his father's father. "So few cherish anything of real value anymore." he said to his father, and his grandfather, and to the shadows on the wall.
